Splash Pads in San Diego // MamaSanDiego.com

Any parent knows that splash pads are great. They can entertain babies and kids of all ages for hours because there’s just something about water raining down from above that’s just too fun. And since we don’t get actual rain here, this is a novelty for San Diegans. There’s ton of splash pads in San Diego, because we’ve got that whole outdoor culture thing going on (oh, and the perfect freakin’ weather for it).

Here’s a roundup of the best splash pads in San Diego, along with links to maps to get you there and all the info you need to plan your day (or a few hours) in the water.

10 Months!

July 24, 2016

Somehow, little baby Bonkers is a 10 month old crawler who is into everything. I remember a few short months ago thinking of how terrifying this stage would be, but totally honest — it’s been the best so far. Sure he’s more challenging because he’s on-the-go nonstop, and he has real feelings and opinions about things now, but he’s also such a little human all of a sudden. I’m learning his preferences, and he’s much more interactive to play with. He’s independently playing now, which is just marvelous. He’s still sleeping basically like a champ, still taking two naps and sleeping for about 11.5-12.5 hours a night (usually not straight, he wakes up 1-2 times per night to nurse).  This age just just downright fun.

new developments:

  • CRAWLING!
  • pulling up on things to stand
  • eating solids like crazy!

likes:

  • riding in his new stroller
  • going to the zoo
  • grandma and auntie visiting San Diego
  • Daniel Tiger
  • biting people (ouch)
  • swim classes and pool time
  • watching the dogs
  • playing with all of his toys and yelling real loud

dislikes:

  • diaper changes
  • wearing pants and socks
  • pureed food
  • long car rides

New Ride for Bonkers

July 23, 2016

You guys. You guys! I just made the best impulse purchase ever. I went into Buddha Baby (I mean, the most fabulous and wonderful store in San Diego for naturally minded parents) intending to see if they had any smaller umbrella strollers. I was sick of the BOB Revolution being so big and bulky and I didn’t like that even at its most inclined, Bonkers was still laid back. But when I walked in the door, I was suckered in by the Orbit Baby G3 Stroller system. This thing is UNREAL. And it’s just as big as the BOB so I didn’t satisfy my initial reason for going in, but it’s going to replace my BOB completely.

Hand, Foot, and Freakin’ Mouth Disease

July 23, 2016

Oh joy, the fun of having a child in daycare fulltime. Bonkers has Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease, and though it was something I have utterly dreaded after hearing horror stories about, I’m so fucking thankful that his case is mild.  It started with a low fever for a few days, and then turned into a rash on his bottom. I was a little concerned, but then his daycare provider messaged me and told me that 3 other kids had HFM. Shit. That’s when it was confirmed.

I’m Getting a Divorce

July 23, 2016

I’ve told the world on social media, so I might as well post it here as well. I’m getting a divorce.

Ouch, those words suck to type even though I’ve typed them many times in the past couple of months. I don’t really want to air my dirty laundry here, and frankly it isn’t anyone’s damn business, but what I can say is that I’m going through the painful experience of finding out that my partner of 8 1/2 years doesn’t love me romantically anymore. And I found this out with a 8 month old beautiful baby in my life, so I’m facing all sorts of absolutely terrifying, devastating, and nerve-wracking changes in my life.

7 Month Spring Family Photoshoot

April 25, 2016

This weekend, we took to the hiking trails at Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve with the wonderful Chris Wojdak Photography for a lovely set of spring photos. Bonkers was an absolute doll for this short 30 minute mini-session and gave us 80+ images to choose from! Wow! I’m really happy with how they turned out considering we had a fully sunny day and sometimes Saturdays get a little packed at this particular popular spot. I’m so overjoyed that we were able to capture this truly special time in Bonkers’ life.

To Bonkers: thank you

April 17, 2016

A lot of things with motherhood are complicated and challenging for me. Some issues around getting back into the workplace, some intense hormotional issues surrounding anything and everything, the list goes on. But today I just had an experience that made me appreciate my son so incredibly much that I felt the need to share. Some days he is just so easy.

He woke at 6:30am today, a time that I’ve probably seen less than 10 times in my life on a Sunday. The weather called for unseasonable heat, 90+ in my area of town, and with my husband having to go into work for a few hours I found myself wondering what we should do to entertain ourselves.

On Sleep Training w/ Ferber

March 30, 2016

Going into parenthood, I knew that sleep training was a controversial subject from the moment I started researching “how to take care of a babything”. On one side, you’ll have scientific and medical research talking about how babies need to be able to self-soothe and learn the skill of falling asleep on their own. On the other hand, the attachment parenting side of the world insists (through equally as legitimate-sounding research) that babies lose their ability to trust and that they simply just “give up” when you stop taking care of their needs. You know, judgmental statements like “parenting is a 24/7 job, and those who let their children cry-it-out are putting sleep as a higher priority than caring for their children.”

Almost Six Whole Months

March 20, 2016

In just a few short days, my itty bitty tiny delicate newborn will no longer be any of those things.  How quickly 6 months came up on us!  Half of a year is behind us, and with it came so many precious milestones that I’m clinging to with utmost importance. Bonkers has grown with leaps and bounds in every way.  He’s dazzling me every day and I’m just in complete awe of his perfection.

I know I’ve said this before, and I know that every parent thinks their child is the best baby on earth. But I seriously have zero complaints about this kid.  He’s just miraculous.  He’s adorable and perfect and has the most big and beautiful blue eyes. His blonde hair is coming in thicker and in a cute mohawk pattern. He’s such a great nighttime sleeper (10-12 hours a night) and is even sleeping some-to-most of the night in his own room now. (Of course, I still bring him into bed after 5-7 hours so that we can get our snuggle time in).  He’s so smiley and SO happy. He loves to jump in his Jumperoo, go for walks in the stroller, go places in the carrier/be worn everywhere, look at and pet the dogs, see horses, grab our faces and give us big open mouthed soggy kisses. He nurses so well, but drinks from a bottle equally as well with no fusses. He’s started daycare a few weeks ago and just loves the kids there, and seems to be having the time of his life.

A Day in the Life of a 5 Month Old

February 21, 2016

9am: Bonkers wakes up by grunting a bit, rolling back and forth from side to side for a bit, then laying flat on his back and lets out loud piercing coos. I am always already awake by now, enjoying the peaceful quiet before the storm. He’s been nursing at this point off and on since around 7:30am, quietly and without opening his eyes. He wakes up happy and ready to play.
